Imagine a day, where instead of cars parallel parked, you saw tiny little parks with people playing games, talking and enjoying the great outdoors… brilliant, right? Rebar, a San Francisco Art and Design Studio, thought so in 2005 when they first transformed a metered parking space into a public park. Today, Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks to bring attention to pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.

XL’s Sacramento office teamed up with Stantec to create ‘Waterplay.’ Our team took this opportunity to discuss water conservation in a fun, interactive way. Stantec focused on the design, while XL focused on the constructability and the outcome was spectacular. The park featured Sprinkler Ring TossHigh-Efficiency Duck Hunt and The Game of Thrones, Ping-pong toss to share in a fun, simple way the importance of capturing rain water, energy efficient washing machines and low flow toilets. It even made it on the news!
