Green Challenge: Zero Waste: Can you envision a future when the concept of “waste” does not exist? When archeologists studying our culture are surprised to find precious natural resources buried in our landfills. Perhaps future societies will mine these landfills for eco-treasure, providing precious material for manufacturing and buildings. Until that time, we believe that one of the most important ways the construction industry can protect the environment and preserve natural resources is to greatly reduce or entirely eliminate construction waste.
Silver LEED-CI is Awarded to XL Construction for Our New Sustainable Headquarters! Our new corporate headquarters is awarded Silver LEED-CI by the USGBC. The 38,000 s.f., project was a MEP design-build tenant improvement project with seismic upgrades. There are high-end finishes throughout, two kitchens, a large training room and an exercise room. Sustainable elements of the building include: brownfield redevelopment, water savings and recycled water use, a 96 percent diversion of construction waste from landfills, the use of rapidly renewable materials, enhanced commissioning of the MEP systems, and the purchase of green power.
Green Challenge: Indoor Air Quality: One workman breaks to eat lunch while another applies flooring adhesive. Both are typical, and seemingly harmless, jobsite activities that can actually have dangerous, long-term repercussions. In fact, the ordinary remains of a lunch left by a worker, or a toxic adhesive used by a subcontractor can cause poor indoor air quality within a building for years to come.
