XL Construction Presents at Lean Construction Forum

Having constructed Johnson & Johnson's first Lean project, XL Construction team members were recently invited to present a case study at the AGC Lean Construction Forum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"The presentation started as a good report on a project, and then it turned great," said Greg Howell, co-founder of the Lean Construction Institute. "They gave a really in-depth report on their success with leading safety indicators."

Several tools from the Lean Project Delivery System were employed on the Cordis (a Johnson & Johnson medical device company) project including the Last Planner System™ and the 5-S assessment system. The XL team also approached safety with a Lean framework, resulting in significant improvements in safety, accountability, focus and mitigation throughout the course of the project.

"The XL approach to safety on the Cordis job was a great example of XL's leadership in the Lean process," said George Lancos, Senior Project Manager for Johnson & Johnson. "The development of the metrics used to review the safety performance served not only as a communication tool for the entire team, but also as a base for what became a great partnership between XL and J&J."

Delivered on-time and on-budget, this significant project for Cordis encompassed 60,000 s.f. of laboratory, manufacturing and office space, which included the construction of several laboratories and two large ISO 8 clean rooms. XL's MEP department supported the design-assist project, including the management of the commissioning effort.

XL Construction sees the industry trending towards Lean strategies with owners understanding that early collaboration delivers measureable results in costs, schedule, quality and safety. As an organization, XL Construction is implementing several Lean principles to improve internal processes, and is also developing standards to implement on all construction projects.
