Travis USD Golden West Middle School Campus Expansion Wins Two ENR California Awards
Travis Unified School District’s Golden West Middle School Campus Expansion earned ENR Northern California’s 2026 Best K-12 Education and Excellence in Safety awards, recognizing the project’s innovative delivery, quality and exceptional safety performance.
XL Construction partnered with Travis Unified School District, Aedis Architects and TimberQuest™ to deliver four permanent mass timber classroom buildings in time to welcome sixth-grade students for the 2025–26 school year.
Using TimberQuest’s DSA prechecked prefabricated mass timber system, the team completed the 16,500-square-foot classroom expansion in just three and a half months, with the full campus improvement project completed in approximately five and a half months. The project also included new utilities, parking, fencing, shade structures and athletic courts.
Working on an active school campus required extensive coordination around students, staff, deliveries and construction operations. Detailed lift planning, scheduled work around student traffic and daily safety coordination helped the project achieve zero recordable incidents across approximately 40,000 worker hours.
These ENR honors recognize the team’s ability to combine speed, innovation, quality and safety while creating permanent learning environments designed to serve Travis USD students for years to come.
