From Project Engineer to General Manager: 20 Years of Building at XL

TBD
By Kevin Ng

Kevin Ng joined XL Construction as a Project Engineer 20 years ago. Now Senior Vice President and General Manager, he looks back on what’s kept him here: the people, the room to grow, and partnership. He also shares how that belief shapes XL’s next chapter with Graham.

Twenty years ago, if you had asked me where my career was headed, helping lead XL Construction into its next chapter probably wouldn’t have been my answer.

I joined XL as a Project Engineer, assuming XL would be a steppingstone in my career. I had no idea it would be the start of a 20-year chapter that would shape my career in ways I never expected. Today, I’m honored to step into my new role as Senior Vice President and General Manager of XL Construction.

People often ask what’s kept me at XL for over two decades. The answer is simple: the people and the opportunity to grow.

Throughout my time at XL, I’ve been encouraged to take on challenges, learn new skills, and expand my sense of what’s possible. I’ve worked alongside incredible mentors, teammates, and clients who encouraged me to become a better builder and leader. Along the way, I learned the value of staying curious and taking a genuine interest in the people around me.

Those lessons continue to shape how I lead our teams today.

Over the course of my career, I’ve also learned that while technical expertise is fundamental to what we do, it’s only part of what makes a project successful. Whether we’re building healthcare facilities, life sciences environments, schools, or advanced technology spaces, what we know and how we execute matters.

But the best outcomes happen when owners, designers, trade partners, and builders invest in partnership early, communicate openly, and work through challenges together. When teams are aligned around a common goal, they’re better equipped to navigate uncertainty, solve problems, and deliver great results.

That same belief in partnership is important as XL enters its next chapter with Graham.

XL is entering an exciting new chapter. We’re expanding our capabilities, geographic reach, and the markets we serve while finding new ways to bring greater certainty and value to our clients. For our clients and partners, much remains the same: XL Construction remains committed to our values, superior project delivery, investing in our people, and Building to Improve Lives. At the same time, the support of Graham creates new opportunities to grow and build on what has made XL successful.
