UC Berkeley Grimes Engineering Center Earns ENR California Sustainability Award of Merit
UC Berkeley’s Grimes Engineering Center has received an ENR Northern California 2026 Award of Merit for Excellence in Sustainability, recognizing the project’s adaptive reuse approach and commitment to reducing environmental impact.
The Grimes Engineering Center transformed and expanded UC Berkeley’s former Bechtel Engineering Center into a modern destination for engineering education, collaboration and student support.
A central element of the project was adaptive reuse. By retaining and modernizing the existing building rather than replacing it, the team reduced the embodied carbon associated with demolition and new construction while extending the useful life of an important campus asset.
The renovated and expanded facility also added approximately 35,500 square feet of new space, balancing UC Berkeley’s need for contemporary learning environments with its broader sustainability goals.
ENR’s Award of Merit for Excellence in Sustainability recognizes the project’s approach to creating long-term value through thoughtful reuse, modernization and lower-carbon construction.
