UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center Renovation Named ENR California’s Best Small Project
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center Renovation has been named ENR Northern California’s 2026 Best Small Project, recognizing a highly complex renovation delivered within an active pediatric healthcare environment.
The $5.3 million project renovated approximately 10,000 square feet across six floors and two buildings at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Improvements included new offices, on-call and support spaces, as well as a new Family Resource and Information Center designed to provide families with support, resources and respite during their care journey.
Delivered through XL’s Strategic Projects Group (SPG), the project was executed within a fully operational pediatric hospital requiring careful planning and extensive coordination. At one point, the team managed 19 active construction areas simultaneously, each requiring strict infection control and pre-construction risk protocols to protect patients, families and hospital staff.
Through close collaboration with UCSF, detailed phasing and flexible scheduling, the team completed the work without disrupting Outpatient Center operations and recorded zero recordable incidents across more than 20,000 worker hours.
The ENR recognition highlights how thoughtful planning and teamwork allowed a relatively small project to make a significant impact on UCSF’s ongoing campus modernization and patient experience.
