XL Construction led the interior build-out of the 78,000 s.f. west coast location of Argo AI, an autonomous vehicle research company which is partnering with Ford and Volkswagen. This site, devoted to engineering, development, and fleet testing, includes research rooms, conference rooms, open office collaboration areas, and a vehicle workshop space. XL also constructed two large break areas, an all-hands space with food service equipment, catering support space, and new unisex restrooms. XL made structural upgrades to accommodate new rooftop equipment, including a 130-ton rooftop air handling unit, exhaust fans, and condensing units. The vehicle shop space included a car lift, exhaust snorkels, and reels. XL and designer Moss Architects, ware lauded for the facility’s “elegant utility and clearly defined spatial logic.” It earned a 2020 Architecture Honor Award from AIA Pittsburgh, home of the Argo AI headquarters.
