XL Construction helped El Camino Health elevate the standard for behavioral health care with a new, 56,000 s.f. OSHPD 1 facility. The new healing-centric facility features 36 private inpatient rooms and state-of-the-art treatment spaces—all completely anti-ligature—to support pre-teens through older adults. Articulating a design that fosters the transition from inpatient stabilization to outpatient treatment, XL built modular patient care suites with dispersed ancillary nursing stations, providing flexibility for more individualized care. XL constructed three enclosed courtyards that bring daylight in and allow patients to safely enjoy time outdoors. XL demolished a portion of the existing operational behavioral health building, requiring close coordination to ensure patient safety of as well as minimize disruption to the adjacent ER. The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification and has won numerous awards.

Challenges and Solutions

Challenge
XL demolished a portion of the existing operational behavioral health building, requiring close coordination to ensure patient safety and minimize disruption to the adjacent ER.

Solution

A detailed phasing plan and schedule was developed collaboratively with El Camino Health leadership and staff. The demolition consisted of multiple phases that required two temporary egress pathways to be constructed and approved by OSHPD field inspectors/IORs during different phases of the project. Execution included detailed MOPs, and weekly and daily communication with hospital staff, as was necessary to mitigate impacts to hospital operations and keep staff, patents, and visitors safe.

Over 45 years of working at the hospital through numerous construction projects has given me a unique perspective on the abilities of various companies. Without hesitation XL Construction has proven to be at the top of the many companies we’ve had on site. Easy to work with and excellent results, I would highly recommend XL Construction to anyone seeking a quality builder.

The XL Construction team has gone above and beyond in their partnership with us to ensure El Camino Hospital can provide the best possible mental health and addiction care to our community. The Foundation is particularly grateful for their generous support of our annual golf tournament, which in recent years, has supported the hospital’s intensive outpatient adolescent mental health program.
