Sonoma Academy’s Janet Durgin Guild & Commons is one of Sonoma County and XL Construction’s most sustainable projects. The 20,000 s.f., two-story building incorporates a student center, a courtyard where students maintain a farm-to-table garden, maker space, wood shop, audio studio, computer lab, dining area, a full-service kitchen, and a teaching kitchen. XL also completed a 3,000 s.f. maintenance yard and bus port. XL built a state-of-the-art, net-positive energy structure using a geothermal heat exchange system, radiant heating and cooling, photo voltaic panels, a living green roof, rain and gray water collection systems, induction-powered appliances, sustainably sourced wood and rammed-earth concrete masonry unit blocks. The project achieved LEED Platinum Certification; is International Living Future Institute Zero Carbon Certified, is the first project to achieve Living Building Challenge Zero Carbon and Petal Certifications in Energy, Materials, Equity, and Beauty; and is seeking WELL v2 Certification.

The WRNS/XL team was professional, engaged and fun to work with, which made the process enjoyable for the entire team. They were committed to making our vision for sustainable design a reality—guiding us through the review process for WELL Building and Net Zero Energy certification.

Janet Gurgin
Head of School, Sonoma Academy

While we embraced the concept of green building, we needed someone with the expertise and experience to really push industry limits on sustainable design and construction. Courtney’s depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainability served us well and we ended up with a team of architects, contractors and engineers who were truly excited to be working with us to reach our ambitious goals. I hope we can work together on another project; it will be fun to see just how far we can push the sustainability limits again!

Program Director, Sonoma Academy
