To better foster scientific collaboration, AstraZeneca joined four of its business units into one dynamic facility, enlisting XL Construction for a four-floor fit-out of an existing 80,000 s.f. new shell building. XL articulated a design that puts complex science on display through the transparent integration of lab, office and communal spaces. Using a design-build approach, XL was able to join with the owner, design team and trade partners to achieve an on-time delivery and no change orders. A customized cost log empowered AstraZeneca to make informed decisions from the very beginning during design and preconstruction. Work included routing of lab gases, placement of sensitive equipment, and vibration mitigation. XL’s practices contributed to LEED Platinum certification and, using a no ladders policy, earned an outstanding safety award from AstraZeneca.

The XL team delivered what we wanted and how we wanted it. They fully aligned with our safety culture. No other general contractor has ever shown this much dedication.

Jane Beaudry
Construction Safety Manager, AstraZeneca

XL was always on-board with using design certainty from the start. The power to be able to see the model and what the building could be before it even happens is very valuable.

Martin Sharpless
Senior Project Director, Intuitive Surgical (formerly with AstraZeneca)

“As a BIM Manager I feel sometimes projects are over complicated when it comes to BIM MEP Coordination and the original intent and goals are lost. XL’s BIM Team does NOT fall into this category. There are no nonsense, but a fair and streamlined approach to this process, which is a breath of fresh air. I am always very pleased when I hear we are teaming up again on another project.

BIM / Detailing Manager, Therma, LLC
